| Franklin is a small city which has been described as a pleasant mix of old and new. The city offers a strong manufacturing presence and is home to Franklin College, a small liberal arts school which was founded in 1834 and has over 1,000 students. The majority of the city’s older homes—some of which are beautifully-restored, historic houses—are located in the downtown area, while the newer homes are concentrated on the city's north and east sides. | The Franklin Department of Parks & Recreation operates ten parks with facilities for swimming, tennis, horseshoes, and supervised craft and hobby classes. In addition, there are adult softball, soccer, gymnastics, aerobics, and indoor walking program, and a Summer Fun club for kids. Brown County State Park is just 20 miles south of Franklin, and the Atterbury Fish and Wildlife Area with facilities for camping, hiking, boating, fishing, and hunting is just 10 miles south of Franklin. The Johnson County Historical Museum is located in Franklin and offers seasonal exhibits throughout the year. The Hillview Country Club and the Legends of Indiana golf courses are also located in Franklin. | ||
